The result was keep. Those in favor of deletion argued that the topic was too trivial to warrant an encyclopedia page, but a clear consensus emerged that it meets the general notability guideline and should therefore be kept. (non-admin closure) {{u|Sdkb}}talk 19:56, 16 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Very much a WP:ROTM event. Not something that should require an article about it, and likely not even for a mention elsewhere. --IWI (talk) 12:58, 10 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep I remember this controversy. The comment caused consternation for the Broccoli growers and garnered national attention. GHWB had to back-peddle, and it was major news. With that said, another GHWB controversy (George H. W. Bush judicial appointment controversies) could be renamed to George H. W. Bush controversies and then include this as a heading. North American Free Trade Agreement can also be included as a controversial topic. Lightburst (talk) 13:19, 10 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep, very noteworthy, hundreds if not thousands of articles with significant discussion and analysis and retrospective discussion. Right cite (talk) 15:25, 10 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep sourcing demonstrates this passes the GNG Chetsford (talk) 15:57, 10 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. ROTM? This was mentioned in multiple assessments and obituaries published or republished in UK WP:RS broadsheet newspapers 1 2 3 4 5. Narky Blert (talk) 19:31, 10 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment I think many of you are forgetting that Wikipedia is not a newspaper. Just because many newspapers have spoken about it, does not mean it is notable for a standalone article. I cannot see any encyclopedia having an article on this. It's also somewhat ridiculous to have an entire article about whether George H W Bush liked broccoli or not. --IWI (talk) 02:46, 11 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • But it is not just newspapers that have covered this. Many books do so too. Wikipedia covers the ridiculous if independent reliable non-news sources have significant coverage of it. Phil Bridger (talk) 07:56, 11 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep WP:ROTM is neither policy nor guideline and so is not a reason to delete. In any case, the matter was not routine – it was quite exceptional and memorable. And note that there has been continuing coverage and so expansion is required: How broccoli became a political hot potato: Provocative remarks by President Obama about his favourite vegetable have reignited a bitter ideological debate. Andrew🐉(talk) 10:37, 11 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep: The nomination does not address the many reliable sources currently used in the article. — Toughpigs (talk) 21:48, 11 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep, easily passes GNG. Devonian Wombat (talk) 21:54, 11 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per WP:NOTEVERYTHING. But I'm sure this will be WP:SNOW kept. KidAd talk 02:14, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. This was clearly not a controversy, but a novelty. The page is well-written above the average and has lots of sources, but having deliberated, the whole event is too unsubstantial to be encyclopedia material. Geschichte (talk) 07:16, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. His attitude to broccoli is covered in detail in many sources, including dry academic books and articles. I don't think I'm untypical (for an Englishman) in that the first two things I remember about the George H. W. Bush presidency are that he led the effort to chuck Saddam Hussein's forces out of Kuwait and that he hated broccoli. Phil Bridger (talk) 07:40, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That makes two of us. Narky Blert (talk) 15:02, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Do you agree with me about remembrances or with Bush about broccoli? Or maybe you co-led the effort to chuck Saddam's forces out of Kuwait? Phil Bridger (talk) 17:57, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge to the article on George H. W. Bush and put it in a broader perspective. This is not substantial enough to merit its own article.John Pack Lambert (talk) 16:39, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Any more than a sentence or two about this at George H. W. Bush would be WP:UNDUE. Surely this is better as a summary-style spinoff article rather than this whole content being merged to the main article? Phil Bridger (talk) 17:57, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per WP:SIGCOV. If you think this is stupid, have you see WP:ODD? Bearian (talk) 20:28, 13 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Per Phil Bridger spinoffs from an article like George H. W. Bush are expected Spudlace (talk) 04:12, 15 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
